Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: Metformin is widely used for treating type 2 diabetes and has potential hepatoprotective effects. Paracetamol overdose, however, can lead to acute liver injury. Aim: To evaluate the effect of metformin on liver enzymes levels in animals exposed to acute paracetamol toxicity. Methods: Wistar rats were divided into four groups: normal control, paracetamol control, metformin-treated, and silymarin-treated. After inducing liver toxicity with paracetamol, liver enzyme levels (ALT, ALP, AST) were measured. Then blood samples were taken for biochemical analysis. Results: Paracetamol significantly increased liver enzyme levels, indicating liver injury. Metformin treatment significantly decreased ALT, ALP, and AST levels compared to the paracetamol control group, showing a protective effect. Conclusion: Metformin significantly mitigates liver enzyme elevation caused by paracetamol toxicity, suggesting its potential as a hepatoprotective agent.
